COP28 is the annual Conference of the Parties (COP) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change from 1992. COP28 President Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber highlights four key themes in his “letter to parties“: fast tracking the transition to clean energy sources, deliver a framework for a new deal on finance to provide stronger support for countries of the Global South, put nature, people, lives and livelihoods at the heart of climate action and to make COP28 “the most inclusive COP” ever. Diverse perspectives and solutions are to be utilized to collectively develop effective strategies in the fight against climate change.
Achieving these goals requires Multi-Stakeholder Partnership (MSP) engagement. Numerous events underscore the collaborative added value for climate protection and are hosted by MSPs:
The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) addresses the significance of global education systems in several events for a safer, fairer, and greener future. An overview of all GPE-participating events can be found here.
The UN Global Compact hosts the event “Multi-Stakeholder Roundtable on Youth Engagement with Climate Action for a Just Transition.”
The Action Coalition on Economic Justice and Rights of the Generation Equality Forum (global MSP on gender equality) with UN Women, UNRISD, Global Care Alliance and others is organizing a discussion on December 9 on gender just climate transition and implications for land rights and the care economy.
Further partnership-related events are for instance (co-)organised by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. You can find an overview of the events here.
These examples underscore the significant role of MSPs as an approach to deliver for the 2030 Agenda. Climate protection and just transition reliy on collaborative engagement. This is particularly evident in the effort to make COP28 more inclusive. For further information and an overview of the extensive COP28 program, please click here.
