Today marks the launch of the sector dialogue on food retail and the food industry, initiated by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS). Federal Minister Bärbel Bas has signed the dialogue agreement together with representatives from companies, civil society, associations and trade unions.

Food retail and the food industry are among the highest-revenue sectors of the German economy. As a significant importer and exporter, the sector operates on global markets, and with that comes considerable human rights and environmental risks within its international supply chains.

The BMAS has been conducting sector dialogues with German businesses since 2020. The aim is to support companies in sectors with particular human rights challenges in implementing their due diligence obligations. Central to this is the multi-stakeholder approach: bringing together different actors helps to address structural grievances, pool resources and share experience, thereby strengthening collective influence.

Further information on the launch of the sector dialogue is available on the BMAS website (in German).
