Germany received the EITI Chair’s Award at the 10th Global Conference of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) in Brussels. The award recognises the outstanding work of Germany’s multi-stakeholder partnership (MSP), D-EITI, which has helped improve data quality and develop a risk-based approach to checking payment flows in the extractive sector.

EITI promotes greater transparency and accountability in the extractive sector worldwide. Germany has been implementing the initiative through D-EITI since 2016. Representatives from government, business and civil society work together on an equal footing. They jointly publish information about Germany’s extractive sector, providing a basis for greater transparency.

The collaboration within D-EITI has helped improve data quality in Germany. The approach developed to check payment flows has also informed EITI reporting beyond Germany and has been incorporated into the international EITI Standard.

The award highlights the contribution MSPs can make: when stakeholders from government, business and civil society bring together their different perspectives and expertise, they can develop solutions that have an impact beyond their immediate national context. D-EITI is an example of how MSPs can drive concrete improvements while also contributing to the development of international standards.
