The event, titled “Enabling effective multi-stakeholder partnerships for the Sustainable Development Goals,” and co-hosted by Partnerships2030, UN DESA, and The Partnering Initiative (TPI) as part of the joint global campaign on multi-stakeholder partnerships, aimed to build capacity to implement MSPs at different levels.
In the first part of the event, small groups used a business game to explore the success factors of partnerships at the individual level. In the presentation that followed, it was emphasized that the most important components of effective partnerships are common interests and a shared vision, benefits for all stakeholders involved, good governance, and collaborative leadership. In addition to the mindset of individual actors, understanding, people skills, and technical knowledge of partnerships are also required. Especially stakeholders who act as bridge builders are therefore of high value for partnerships.
In the second part, the focus was on organizational capabilities and capacities. Examples from the participants underlined the obstacles to successful participation in MSPs, especially bureaucracy and funding opportunities, especially for civil society. At the same time, it was emphasized that donors are increasingly interested in partnership approaches, which can also benefit individual organizations wishing to participate in MSP.
The third and final part of the event focused on the role of national platforms for partnerships. Among others, the Tanzania Sustainable Development Platform presented itself. The audience also contributed and reported on platforms, for example in Kenya, Nigeria, and Mexico.
The event was recorded and can be accessed online.
