How can sustainable development be advanced under increasingly complex conditions? One of the key messages emerging from the UNECE Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (RFSD) 2026 is clear: strong partnerships remain essential for accelerating progress and addressing complex challenges collectively.

Held in April, the Forum brought together representatives from governments, business, civil society, academia and international organisations to discuss progress and challenges related to sustainable development.

Among the Forum’s five main takeaways, the role of multi-stakeholder partnerships (MSPs) stood out in particular. Discussions highlighted that partnerships now extend far beyond individual development goals and are increasingly seen as a central mechanism for implementation. Governments alone cannot address complex challenges. Collaboration between public institutions, the private sector, civil society and international organisations was consistently identified as a key driver of effective action.

The Forum also underlined that successful collaboration requires long-term structures, shared responsibility and inclusive approaches. In a context of increasingly interconnected challenges, the discussions once again reinforced the role of MSPs as catalysts for sustainable and impactful solutions.
