On September 28, the Gender & Chemicals Partnership (G&CP) celebrated its launch during the 5th session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM5) in Bonn, Germany. The multi-stakeholder partnership (MSP) advocates for gender equality and women’s empowerment in chemicals management.

Chemicals often have gendered impacts on human health. Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in all their diversity can support the sound management of chemicals and waste. However, gender-responsive chemicals management has hardly been realized worldwide. That is why, interested stakeholders from the world of chemistry came together and launched the Gender & Chemicals Partnership (G&CP) with support from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and Partnerships2030. Together, the partners aim to make future chemicals management gender-transformative.

At the launch event on September 28, the objectives, initial activities, and further development process of the G&CP were presented. Discussions with participants revolved particularly around the lack of gender data and research in chemicals management as well as gender mainstreaming tools and strategies.

During the event, the interim board members Mexico, BMUV, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), and Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC), as well as the Secretariat MSP Institute, reaffirmed their future cooperation and thanked Partnerships2030 for their support in the initial phase of the MSP. State Secretary Christiane Rohleder (BMUV) said in her speech: “Thanks (…) to the GIZ program Partnerships 2030 for their expert support. The GIZ team has already made valuable contributions to the development, growth and governance structure of the Gender & Chemicals Partnership.”
