The event was hosted by the multi-stakeholder partnership (MSP) Forum for Sustainable Palm Oil (FONAP) together with partner organizations and other MSPs such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The event in Frankfurt am Main was attended by around 300 stakeholders from the public sector, civil society, academia, and the private sector.
The organizers reaffirmed their support for the new EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). They pointed out that MSPs involvement in the palm oil sector has already resulted in relatively advanced traceability. A large part of the new EU regulations will revolve around due diligence of supply chains.
There is still an 18-month transition period before the EUDR comes into effect. From then on, actors in the palm oil sector must also comply with the regulations. There are still some obstacles, such as the better use of digital solutions for tracking or the stronger involvement of smallholders. For this and many other topics, there were numerous opportunities for learning, discussion, and networking, both in plenary and in small groups. In this way, the Sustainable Palm Oil Dialogue can help ensure that companies can comply with the EUDR in the future and that sustainability for palm oil becomes the norm.
